Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has said Spurs are not close to spending £100m on a single player, distancing the club from Arsenal’s approach in the transfer market.
Spurs have undergone major changes following the removal of Daniel Levy as chairman and the Lewis family’s decision to install a new leadership team. While plans are in place to grow the business and improve on-field success, Frank said Tottenham are still some way from matching Arsenal’s spending power. Arsenal set a marker by signing Declan Rice for £105m in 2023, while Spurs’ record signing remains Richarlison’s £60m move in 2022.
Frank questioned former boss Ange Postecoglou’s claim that Spurs would never make a £100m signing, suggesting it could happen in the long term, but not any time soon. He stressed the importance of time, strong processes and smart investment over simply spending big money on individual players.
Rather than relying solely on expensive signings, Frank said he believes in developing current players and identifying the right profiles to invest in, pointing to Rice as an example of a well-timed, high-value signing. He added that no successful team has relied entirely on repeated £80m or £90m transfers to reach the top.
Tottenham recently received £100m in funding from the Lewis family, with further investment expected to follow. Frank said he is confident the board is committed to long-term success and will support him in building a competitive team.
