Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom captures astonishing moments from Zambia’s Luangwa Valley — including a lion rescuing a pregnant hyena from wild dogs.
Filmed over five years, the series follows lions, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs as they battle for survival. Executive producer Mike Gunton said: “Only nature could write a story like this.”
Other rare scenes include wild dogs saving a packmate from a crocodile and a hyena hiding stolen food underwater to conceal its scent.
Narrated by Attenborough, Kingdom also highlights threats such as habitat loss and snare traps, which scientists say are changing predator behaviour.
Despite the dangers, Dr Matthew Becker of the Zambia Carnivore Programme said the series offers hope: “It’s a challenge, but it’s not hopeless.”
